Last month, I made a journal entry questioning what Spike's role will be when Season 4 comes out. Even though this question is still a year away from being answered and after reading your comments in my last entry, I thought it would be fun if we'd discuss what his new role will be. Keep in mind that Twilight's role as a princess is the biggest factor on what Spike will do. Maybe she won't need him anymore. Maybe she might need him more than ever now. A lot of these scenarios are ideas that have been brought up in time to time in several MLP forums and in series of fanart.

NOTE:If Pr. Twilight is able to stay in Ponyville and live her normal life, most if not all these scenarios will be inconseqential.

#1 Train to be Twilight's personal guard

This was a idea I personally liked when I read it in the comment boxes. Spike will become overwhelmed at Twilight's new role and think that he needs to toughen up to help her. So Spike would secretly go to Shining Armor and get taken under his hoof to train him to be tougher physically and mentally. A lot of slapstick could arise from this as well as the passion Spike could have to wanting to help Twilight no matter the price. The problem is that I'm not sure what the friendship lesson would be here. Perhaps it could be you don't always need to be big and strong to help your friends. It's just being there for your friend and doing everything in your ability to help your friend. This would also be a good way for Spike and Shining Armor can have some guy time. Rarely we've seen two male characters in this show develop a chemistry. Similar to the one that Twilight shares with Spike. I mean if Spike has really been with Twilight as an egg, he and S.A. should know each other at least a little bit.

#2 Dragon Quest Revisited

Okay. I know in Dragon Quest that Spike said that he was at peace that he's a dragon that lives amongst ponies. However, we still didn't get the chance to learn more about dragons. So Pr. Celestia would sent Spike and a few of the manes possibly to a far away dragon land. We'd get a brief cameo of those three teenage dragons from Dragon Quest (as amusing as they were) but the spotlight there would focus on a few elder dragons. Here, Spike and the ponies could finally learn the ways of the dragons in terms of the culture, myths, and beliefs. Spike will learn what the traditional lifestyle of a dragon is and he will tell the elders everything he's learn his lifetime with his pony friends. The dragons would discuss this and bring up the idea to Pr. Celestia that perhaps ONE day ponies and dragons could live in harmony.

#3 The Spike-Celestia connection

A lot of people have fondled with the idea of Celestia being the mom-figure in Spike life. . . .Uhhhh-huh. How do you figure that? We've never seen these two really interact with each other that much. Let's change that, shall we? Spike would one day again of questions on where his egg came from and he goes to Celestia for answers. This part here could be tricky because you don't want to get TOO dark for a kid's show. Celestia could say that she found the egg during one of her quests or something, with Spike's parents nowhere in sight. With Spike being dejected, Celestia would take matter into her own hooves and give Spike the feel of having a mother for the 1st time in his life. How does she do this? I'm not sure. It honestly doesn't have to be a whole lot since Spike has been fine this long without knowing a whole lot about his kind.

I know what a lot of you are thinking. "Wouldn't you consider Twilight as Spike's mom figure in his life?" Me personally, yes and no. Yes because there have been instances, if only brief, where Twilight has done a lot of motherly things with Spike. Such as wanting him to be clean, tucking him into bed at night, being the cause of his birth, and just BEING there for Spike. As much as I love their relationship, they feel more like a brother-sister relationship since they do mess with each other sometimes. No because of two things. One, Twilight's age. I think she's a tad too young to be a mother figure to a baby dragon like Spike. 2. Her new role of being a princess. Depending on what this role IS, when will Twilight have the time to be a mom to Spike with her having Equestrian events to worry about?

These are just 3 scenarios that I think Spike could benefit from in Season 4. I really do hope that if Spike gets more episodes next season, they will actually ADD something to his character. A lot of screen-time is well and good, but when you don't bring something new to the table your audience will get tired of seeing you on screen. Please leave a comment if you have an idea of what Spike could do to either help himself or the ponies on Season 4. I look forward to your feedback!

Personally I Can See All 3 Scenarios (4 Including The One With Moondancer) Happening On The 4th Season, First Spike Trying To Find A Way To Help Twilight And Decides To Be A Knight And Thus Ends Under Shining Armor's Tutelage, Then Later He Could Catch Up With Moondancer Or Any Old Friend, Then Spike Goes To Celestia To Uncover His Mysterious Past, And After A Truthful Story And A Friendship Lesson, Spike Goes To The Newest Dragon Quest To Find About His Species, And Could Perhaps Decide To Stay There Until He's Strong Enough To Help Twilight, Which Puts Her Sad Until She's Comforted By Her Friends, And Eventually Spike Returns Better Than Ever. (Perhaps Changed As Well)
What You Think?

GOOD LUCK!
